About Saint Gregory’s College

Nigeria’s Premiere College Prep Institution

Since 1928

Turning boys into Men

The history of St. Gregory’s College, Lagos is divided into the former and later years of her existence. The former years of her existence covered the years when she was known as St. Gregory’s Grammar School, established solely through the efforts of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos on 12th March, 1882, named after Pope St. Gregory the Great (540-604). This great citadel of learning metamorphosed from St. Gregory’s Grammar School to St. Gregory’s College on 27th January, 1928.
Today, St. Gregory’s College has developed into a unique institution sought after by discerning minds who seek to partake of its qualitative education planked on the philosophy of educating “the whole of the human person:” i.e., physical, mental, academic, moral and spiritual development. With an unbroken history of over one hundred and forty (140) years, it remains the bedrock of academic excellence and character formation with an array of distinguished “Gregorians” who have left their footprints on the sands of time.
Our college has reasons to be proud of her long and strong tradition coupled with its enviable achievements, making it our prayer and our hope that present and future generations will be inspired by the past in such a way that their own lives will be characterized by integrity and a highly developed spirit which will, in turn, further strengthen the tradition and achievements of the school in years to come.
“The establishment of St. Gregory’s College by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos was for the purpose of giving young boys a holistic education that is built on two pillars – fear of God and sound knowledge of all there is to know.
This explains the motto of our beloved College Pro Fide et Scientia (For faith and knowledge). In faithfulness to the vision of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, the Management of the College since its inception has constantly placed the highest premium on these core values. On these pillars rest the source and summit of our college and of all who are associated with it.
St Gregory’s College has come to be known globally as one of the foremost formation grounds for young men destined to make the world a better place. Our holistic formation gives our students the added advantage that makes them outliers. Their practically enriched academic curriculum is driven by the moral formation that makes it integral. Our enviable landscape makes learning, acquisition of skills, and sporting activities worthwhile”.
